Pain of an Orphan

The tragic events in Iraq over the years, due to the crimes of the cruel former Baath regime and the events of today where explosions, car bombings and forced migration has become part of everyday life, have resulted to the creation of some 3 million orphans in Iraq. The city of Karbala by itself is home to 25 thousand orphans.
The Development and Relief Foundation conducted an interview with just one of the torn families who were left without a breadwinner and remained to bear the pain of being orphans. Our reporter interviewed Farah, one of the two children who suffered the tragic loss of their father due to a car explosion in Karbala in June, 2007.
"After they killed my father, we could no longer stay in Baghdad," said 7-year-old Farah. "We were afraid the terrorist will come back after us."
Our reporters conducted the interview at their so-called home. The right word for it is a "shack". The roof of the house is made out of palm tree leaves. Their home is basically one room; there is no living room, family room, master bedroom or kitchen. All they have is one small room. Electricty and water is not hooked on to their house; they live on candles and water bottles. Farah and her old brother were forced to drop out of school so that they may help their mother make a living. They beg on Karbala's streets to make enough to have lunch and dinner. "We sleep without dinner sometimes when our money is just enough for lunch," Farah's mother told our reporters.
Their home is obviously not strong enough to protect them from the freezing degrees on winter, nor is it sufficient enough to protect them from the summer's heat. For Farah and her family, life is too difficult to endure.    "I wish he had taken us with him," Farh said, speaking of her late father.
The Development and Relief Foundation invites all those interested to resque Farah and the 25,000 orphans in Karbala like Farah. Make a generous donation to the DRF and sponsor an orphan or orphans.
