Reconstructing the streets of Karbala

These are the streets of the holy city of Karbala. These are the streets that 15 million visitors annually walk on. These are the streets of the holiest Muslim city in the world.

But why do the streets look like this? Why are the streets of Karbala dug up and full of ditches? Why are the streets unwalkable? Why does the holiest Muslim city in the world not have proper construction?

During the days of the former regime, Saddam Hussain had purposely neglected the Shiites cities, including Karbala and Najaf. He destroyed as much as he could within these cities. The Shiite cities were always his target, while the cities of Tikrit, Fallujah and Ramady were prosperous. Saddam was a ruthless Sunni tyrant who discriminated against these Shiite cities.

But Saddam is gone; the Baath party is history. Why is Karbala still in ruins and destruction? Why is Karbala still so neglected?

Karbala’s City Council agreed to spend 90% of the city’s budget on the sewer system as well as fixing the roads. Due to political corruption, many companies took their salaries and left; leaving the streets of Karbala in destruction. The federal government has complete knowledge of this corruption but is paralyzed; it cannot fix the problem.

Karbala is in need of so much help, so much construction, so much rebuilding. If the government is incompetent of doing the job, then faithful Muslims should hold the responsibility of fixing their holiest city. Muslims around the world must come to Karbala and put their investments.
